January Light Photo Challenge | Day 10

“In the right light, at the right time, everything is extraordinary.” – Aaron Rose

Daylight

Taken in 2011 in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, this photo was one of a series of early morning shots that captured the rising sun. I had just taken a photography course and was eager to try out what I’d learned. Unfortunately, my camera was sub-par and I didn’t own an iPhone yet.

However, it sharpened my observation skills and I did get some decent captures during the “golden hour” that morning on the beach.

While the rising sun was still a tiny orb over the horizon, I focused on this sandcastle. With the tiny toy soldier, his rifle raised in victory, atop the turret and the seagulls gliding low over the water it made for a nice picture.

Sandcastle

Rise/Set

I captured this early morning shot on a vacation in the Outerbanks, NC. The sun was just coming up over the Atlantic Ocean and the peacefulness of the empty beach matched my quiet mind.

When I came upon this sand creation I wondered about the children who created it. They fashioned several turrets with a tiny plastic figure standing on the center one. Built the day before it survived high tide and welcomed the new day.

I thought it would make an interesting foreground for a photo of the rising sun, so I steadied my iPhone and prepared to take the picture. Just then a line of seagulls flew into the viewfinder skimming the water in search of breakfast.

The timing was perfect and the vacation was pretty great as well!

Lifeguard Tower

Soon silence will have passed into legend.  Man has turned his back on silence.  Day after day he invents machines and devices that increase noise and distract humanity from the essence of life, contemplation, meditation… tooting, howling, screeching, booming, crashing, whistling, grinding, and trilling bolsters his ego.  His anxiety subsides.  His inhuman void spreads monstrously like a gray vegetation.  ~Jean Arp
