“X” is for xebec, as in the type of ship pictured above.
X words are tough to come up with, so I turned to the Information Highway and found lists. After perusing more x words than I though existed, I settled on xebec (mainly because it was in Wikipedia and there were decent photos available.) Some days, you just need to take a shortcut…
A xebec (/ˈziːbɛk/ or /zᵻˈbɛk/), also spelled zebec, was a Mediterranean sailing ship that was used mostly for trading. It would have a long overhanging bowsprit and aft-set mizzen mast. The term can also refer to a small, fast vessel of the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries, used almost exclusively in the Mediterranean Sea. (Courtesy of Wikipedia)
