Blogging From A to Z – Y

“Y” is for “Yesterday”, the title of the Beatles song, co-written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon, and performed by McCartney in the video below.

“Yesterday” was voted the best song of the 20th century in a 1999 BBC Radio 2 poll of music experts and listeners and was also voted the No. 1 pop song of all time by MTV and Rolling Stone magazine the following year. In 1997, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI) asserts that it was performed over seven million times in the 20th century alone. Youth is another Y word that comes to mind when I think of yesterday. While the song is specifically about the breakup of a relationship, my memories of yesterday entail much more. Not only do they consist of my own childhood and growing up years, but those of my children, as well.

The photo above shows the youthful version of our beloved Beatles from yesterday and is on display at The Hard Rock Cafe in New York City, along with some of the suits they wore while performing.

  1. Another quote about “yesterday” I like is: “Smile. Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.” First read that quote as a kid. I didn’t “get” it until I was a bit older.
